In this
article, Nissan Motor Corporation (2007) focuses on the new concept car that
has many preventative features designed to assist in reducing drunk driving.
The features that are implemented are Alcohol Odor Sensors, Facial Recognition
System, and Driving Behavior. The alcohol odor sensor is built into the shift
knob of the car and into the passenger seat sensor, which can detect the
presence of alcohol in the perspiration of the driver’s palm or in the air as
he starts to drive. When alcohol is detected, the car navigation system issues
a voice alert and a message alert on the navigation system monitor.
For the
facial recognition system, a camera is mounted on the instrument cluster facing
the driver to monitor the driver’s face. The system is calibrated to monitor
the driver’s state of consciousness through the blinking of the eyes.
Another
feature of the car is to monitor the driving behavior of the vehicle to sense
if the vehicle is swerving out of its driving lane when the system detects
signs of inattentiveness or distraction in the driver, voice, and message
alerts are provided via the navigation system. The seat-belt alert mechanism is
switched on to alert the driver to get his attention.
Good job on the summary. It is interesting how the perspiration of the driver’s palm or in the air can detect the presence of alcohol in the car. I am glad that the article has provided you with useful information and understanding on how the sensors and systems can be implemented to prevent drunk drivers from driving. I hope this will help you in the explanation of the sensors in the report!
ReplyDeleteDespite that, I think you could also include what you feel towards the implementation of the sensors and their effectiveness. Through that, we can understand from your perspective on how useful these sensors are.
I look forward to more of your writeups. Thank you.

Izzati
Hi Carely,
ReplyDeleteGood work with the summary. It has a lot of very good information regarding the methods to detect alcohol in the driver's system.
Few suggestions I felt were :
1) The alcohol odour sensor is built.... (odor - odour)
2) .... in the perspiration of the driver’s palm or the air as he starts to drive. (do not need the word "in" after or)
3) Another feature of the car is to monitor the driving behaviour of the ..... (behavior - behaviour)
Overall, it is an insightful summary and these pieces of information would be very helpful for our project.
Regards,
Sarmila
